Miami and Phoenix – Greegor sPeak

Time will come when this is so.

Once Miami of coral and crocs,

Phoenix of cactus and coyotes.

Now water and wasteland.

When we said NO WAY,

They said WAY.

Swamp of turbine,

Sand of panel,

Smell of tomorrow.

Biography

I am a retired university professor with a doctorate in ecology. I grew up in central Ohio and when I was six, I was bedridden with rheumatic fever for 2 years which forced me to learn to walk all over again. I went to Miami of Ohio, Ohio State University and University of Arizona. During my 20s, research and recreation took me to Central and South America, New Zealand and Antarctica (where I have a mountain named in my honor) as a field assistant, ecologist, wanderer, and wilderness ranger. While at University of Arizona, I met my wife of almost 50 years and in 2007, we joined the Peace Corps in Queretaro, Mexico, and for the next four years, we had undoubtedly the greatest experience of our lives. During those years I helped the Mexican federal environmental agency address environmental problems and solutions in central México’s poor villages. Besides family, my passions are blues harmonica, writing editorials, essays and short stories combining environmental issues and humor. In 2017, I published a short book of stories, Going To México, based on our years in the Peace Corps, and I am currently working on my second book based on some of the experiences collected from my life as a dedicated eccentric. I currently live with my wife in Boise, Idaho.
